Especially worth telling me: a figure that disagrees with the current Orton chart, a firing case this does not handle, or anything that broke.

ICD-10 changes for FY2027

Effective 2026-10-01. 238 codes added, 21 deleted, and 15 that keep their number but stop being billable, which is the group that denies without looking wrong.

On 2026-10-01 the code set goes from 98,186 entries to 98,403. Most of that is straightforward: new codes you will not use until you need them, and deletions you will notice immediately because the claim bounces.

The 15 codes in the first section are the problem. They are not deleted. They keep their number and their description. They stop being billable, so a claim carrying one looks entirely correct and denies anyway.

Paste the codes you actually bill into the code checker and it says which of these you use.

Stops being billable

Still valid codes. No longer submittable on their own, because they become category headers grouping more specific codes. Check the children of each with the code checker.

Deleted

In FY2026 and not in FY2027. 21 codes. The 15 billable ones are valid for dates of service up to 30 September 2026 and invalid from 2026-10-01. The other 6 are category headers, which were never submittable on their own, so there is no date of service they can be billed for.

Questions about the changeover

Which ICD-10 codes stop being billable on 2026-10-01?

15 of them, and they are the ones most likely to catch you out, because nothing about them looks wrong.

They are not deleted. They keep their code and their description. They simply become category headers, which means they group more specific codes rather than standing on their own, and a claim carrying one denies.

I42.0, dilated cardiomyopathy, is the clearest example: an everyday cardiology code that is billable today and a header from 1 October. The full list is on this page, and you can check individual codes with the code checker.

How many ICD-10 codes change for FY2027?

238 added, 21 deleted, 4 reworded and 15 with a changed billable status.

That takes the code set from 98,186 entries to 98,403, of which 74,879 are billable.

These figures are not transcribed from an announcement. They are derived by diffing the two published code files against each other, so they are the changes themselves rather than somebody's summary of them.

When exactly do the new codes take effect?

Dates of service on and after 2026-10-01. There is no phase-in and no grace period.

A claim for a date of service in September uses the FY2026 set even if you submit it in November. A claim for 1 October uses FY2027. So both sets are live at once for as long as you have unbilled September work, which is exactly when the mistakes happen.

Do I need to do anything about the reworded codes?

Usually not. A reworded code keeps its number and its billable status. Only the description text changes, so claims are unaffected.

It matters if you keep your own copy of the descriptions in a superbill, a template or a cheat sheet, because those will quietly disagree with the payer's copy until you update them. All 4 are listed below with the old and new wording side by side.

Where does this list come from?

From the two published NCHS code files, diffed against each other. Snapshot taken 2026-08-31.

Nothing is transcribed and nothing is summarised. If a code appears here as deleted, it is because it is present in the FY2026 file and absent from the FY2027 one.

ICD-10-CM is a work of the United States federal government and is not subject to copyright, which is why this can be published in full.

Notes and sources

Derived, not transcribed. Every row on this page comes from diffing the two published NCHS order files against each other: FY2026 (98,186 entries) against FY2027 (98,403). A code appears as deleted because it is in one file and not the other, not because a summary said so.

Files from ftp.cdc.gov/pub/Health_Statistics/NCHS/Publications/ICD10CM/, snapshot 2026-08-31. Chapter groupings are from the FY2027 Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.

Licensing. ICD-10-CM is a work of the United States federal government and is not subject to copyright under 17 U.S.C. 105, which is why the full lists can be published here.

This is not coding advice. Verify against your encoder before changing anything. Tell me if a row here disagrees with the addenda.
